A Primer on primers

Prime Time

But the labels says: Paint and Primer in One.  I don't need to prime!

That's what the paint companies want you to think.  What ends up happening is that you use their more expensive paint as primer, and in many cases the end result is far from desirable.  Sometimes so much so that you are faced with the dreaded do-over.

There are several reasons TO prime.  Here they are:

  • walls with stains of any kind
  • going from shinier finish to a flatter finish
  • going from very dark to light color
  • going from very light to dark color (tinted primer is ideal)
  • going between opposing colors in the spectrum

When you consider your project, do any of these situations apply?  If so, you must apply! (primer, that is).   Primer is cheaper than paint, dries very quickly and only one coat is needed.

Think about how much care you've taken to select JUST the right wall color. Using a primer will give you the beautiful look you want: guaranteed!

The right tools make the job easier

Drop cloths

Basically, there are two types of drop cloths: Plastic film and canvas.  Plastic film is ideal for draping over furniture or to cover windows.  Using it on the floor can be slippery.  Best to use canvas cloths on the floor.

Tape

To tape or not to tape, that really is the question.  If you're going to use tape, get the right tape for your purpose.  There are tapes with 14-day release if you think you'll need to leave that tape up for a couple of weeks.  There are tapes with 8-day release, too, that are more cost effective and some tapes have treated edges to make a crisp clean line.

Cutting-in tools

So, you hate to use tape.   Angled sash brushes, wheeled edging tools and edge guides are just a few options we stock that will speed your work along, giving you clean sharp edges with no tape!

Roller covers

This is a really important tool for getting the best result possible.  A simple rule of thumb: the smoother the wall, the shorter the nap you need on the roller.  More is definitely not better when it comes to paint rollers.  Too much nap for your wall and that roller won't roll at all.

Roller frames

A well-made, high-quality roller frame will give you years of service.  The one shown in the picture above is a good choice.  the 90 degree turns in the frame give the best stability and will allow you to apply paint evenly on any wall or ceiling.

Paint trays

A good metal paint tray will last you many years.  Metal trays can attach to ladders to speed you along in your work.  Consider investing in the disposable liners to keep it clean and make job clean-up a snap.  There are also plastic  paint trays that are completely disposable at the end of your job.
